Hopkins
(1877-1969)
was
born
in
Irwin
,
Ohio
. In
1896
, he
entered
The
Ohio
State
University
to
study
engineering
, but
art
soon
took
a
priority
in his
studies
.
Hopkins
entered
the
Columbus
Art
School
in
1897
and a
year
later
transferred
to the
Art
Academy
of
Cincinnati
,
where
he
studied
with
Frank
Duveneck
. In
1902
he
traveled
to
Paris
,
where
he
became
acquainted
with the
French
Impressionists
Renoir
,
Degas
, and
Monet
, in
whose
garden
he
spent
a
lot
of his
time
painting
. He
returned
to the
United
States
in
1904
,
where
he
married
Edna
Boies
, an
artist
who
worked
in the
medium
of
woodblock
prints
. They
settled
in
Paris
, but
left
Europe
following
the
outbreak
of
World
War
I
.
Upon
returning
to the
United
States
,
Hopkins
joined
the
staff
of the
Cincinnati
Academy
of
Art
, and
taught
with
Duveneck
, his
former
instructor
. He also was an
artillery
camouflage
instructor
during
World
War
I
.
Hopkins
returned
to
Cincinnati
as the
head
of the
Academy
in
1919
.
During
this
time
, he
started
to
paint
the
Cumberland
Mountain
people
,
portraying
their
earthy
,
truthful
character
in
sharp
contrast
to his
earlier
subjects
from
sophisticated
European
society
.
Hopkins
returned
to The
Ohio
State
University
in
1932
as
artist
in
residence
,
pursuing
an
academic
career
while
commuting
between
his
home
outside
of
Mechanicsburg
and his
apartment
in
Columbus
. He
became
the
head
of the
Fine
Arts
Department
at the
university
, with a
six-member
faculty
, and
during
his
tenure
the
department
expanded
to a
faculty
of
40
.
Hopkins
retired
from
OSU
in
1947
.
Shortly
after
his
death
the
university
named
the
fine
arts
building
Hopkins
Hall
in his
memory
.
