by
Archibald
Willard
around
1890
.
Moser
, a
Civil
War
veteran
and
friend
of
Willard
,
appears
in a
costume
he
wore
in
Wellington's
1876
Fourth
of
July
parade
. In
celebration
of the
centennial
,
Willard
painted
his
famous
Spirit
of '
76
painting
that
included
Moser
. This
portrait
of
Moser
is
based
on that
work
and was
created
around
1890
. The
painting
measures
57

"

cm)
.
Archibald
Willard
(1836-1918)
was
born
in
Bedford
,
Ohio
in
1836
. His
family
moved
to
Wellington
,
Ohio
in the
1850s
.
Although
he had
little
formal
training
as an
artist
,
Willard
worked
for a
carriage
maker
,
painting
pictures
on
finished
carriages
.
After
serving
in the
Civil
War
, his
work
came
to the
attention
of a
Cleveland
art
retailer
who
marketed
his
work
. He
is
best
known
for his
painting
The
Spirit
of '
76
.
