Houck's
Sawmill
circa
1880
. The
sawmill
was
built
on the
north
fork
of the
Licking
River
on the
east
edge
of
Centerburg
,
Ohio
by
Jacob
Houck
.
It
was
followed
shortly
by a
sawmill
south
of
town
built
by
Samuel
Hupp
. In the
1920s
and
1930s
the
millpond
still
existed
and
probably
was
drained
and
filled
in
when
that
area
became
a
public
park
in
1945
. The
Houcks
came
from the
Juniata
area
of
Pennsylvania
. In
1809
Jacob
Houck
and his
brother
James
Houck
,
along
with
Joseph
Jennings
, were the
second
settlers
to
purchase
land
in what would
become
Hilliar
Township
, the
first
being
Dr
.
Richard
Hilliar
.
Houck
Settlement
,
just
southwest
of
where
Centerburg
now
stands
, was the
first
settlement
in the
area
. In
1811
the
Wooster
,
Mt
.
Vernon
and
Columbus
Road
(later
known
as
Routes
U
.
S
.
36
and
Ohio
3)
was
laid
out
by
James
Houck
,
Jacob's
brother
,
just
to the
north
of
Jacob
Houck's
property
line
. In
1819
the
Knox
County
court
of
common
pleas
granted
Hilliar
Township
one
justice
, and
Jacob
Houck
was
elected
. He
held
that
position
until
1822
and
again
from
1824
through
1826
.
