(1861-1921)

novelist

poet

essayist
, and
composer
of
more
than
800
hymns
. She was
born
in
Hiram
,
Ohio
in a
house
next
to the
Hiram
Christian
Church
,
where
her
father
served
as
pastor
. She
lived
in
Cleveland
and
Indianapolis
before
returning
to the
Hiram
Christian
Church
in
1906
with her
husband
, the
Reverend
John
Pounds
.
Jessie
Brown
Pounds
'
hymns
were
particularly
popular
at the
end
of the
19th
and
early
20th
centuries
.
One
of her
best
known
hymns
, "
Beautiful
Isle
of
Somewhere
" was
said
to be
President
William
McKinley's
favorite
hymn
and was
sung
at his
funeral
. Her
novels
included
such
titles
as
Norman
Macdonald
,
1887
;
Roderick
Wayne
,
1889
; The
Young
Man
from
Middlefield
,
1901
; and
Rachel
Sylvestre
, a
Story
of the

,

.
