Garden

. The
garden
is
shaped
like
a
Celtic
cross
, and
developed
from
turf
,
slate
, and
sandstone
. The
finished
garden
was
re-dedicated
in
1939
when
the
Prime
Minister
of
Eire
,
Eamon
de
Valera
,
visited
Cleveland
. The
photograph
measures

Irish
people
first
arrived
in
Cleveland
around
1830
on the
near
northwest
side
, and
settled
in
Euclid
,
Lakewood
,
Cleveland
Heights
,
Rocky
River
, and
Bay
Village
.
Irish
immigration
increased
with those
seeking
refuge
from the
potato
famine
of the
late
1840s
.
Many
found
work
in
building
the
Ohio
and
Erie
Canal
and
laboring
in
shipyards
and
steel
mills
. The
Irish
in
Cleveland
created
social
organizations
such
as the
Irish
Literary
and
Benevolent
Society
to
promote
Irish
culture
.
Many
Irish
have
made
their
mark
on
Cleveland
history
,
including
S
.
Creadon
and
John
T
.
Feighan
,
founders
of
one
of
Cleveland's
largest
breweries
, the
Standard
Brewing
Company
, and
F.J
.
O'Neill
,
who
purchased
the
Cleveland
Indians
,
thus
allowing
professional
baseball
to
remain
in
Cleveland
. The
Cleveland
Cultural
Gardens
,
located
along
East
Boulevard
and
Martin
Luther
King
Jr
.
Boulevard
, are
landscaped
gardens
with
statuary
honoring
Cleveland's
ethnic
groups
.
During
the
dedication
of the
Shakespeare
Garden
in
1916
,
it
was
decided
that
similar
sites
should be
prepared
for
each
of the
city's
ethnic
communities
. The
first
of these
gardens
, the
Hebrew
garden
, was
established
in
1926
. On
May
9
,
1927
the
city
set
aside
areas
of
Rockefeller
Park
for
future
gardens
. The
Italian
,
German
,
Lithuanian
,
Slovak
, and
Ukrainian
gardens
were
established
in
1930
; the
Polish
,
Hungarian
,
Czech
, and
Yugoslav
gardens
in
1934
; and the
American
,
Russian
,
Irish
,
Greek
, and
Syrian
gardens
in
1938
.
Romanian
,
Estonian
,
Afro-American
,
Chinese
,
Finnish
, and
Indian
gardens
have
since
been
created
.
Planning
and
fundraising
for
each
garden
was
undertaken
within
the
ethnic
communities
,
while
the
Cleveland
Cultural
Garden
Federation
(established
in
1925)
oversaw
planning
and
coordinated
various
joint
programs
.
