Description
Animal
claws
and
teeth
are a
common
component
of
Hopewell
necklaces
. In
some
cases
, the
Hopewell
made
replicas
of
teeth
and
claws
from
mica
,
canal
coal
, and
copper
. The
objects
in this
photograph
were
found
during
an
archaeological
excavation
in the
1920s
at the
Mound
City
earthworks
complex
in
southern
Ohio
. They
represent
copper
replicas
of
animal
claws
or
teeth
.
William
Mills
of the
Ohio
Historical
Society
suggested
in the
1920s
that they
might
represent
alligator
teeth
. The
smaller
objects
, in the
middle
of the
photograph
, are
probably
meant
to
represent
claws
.
Future
studies
of these
objects
may
be
able
to
confirm
this
since
the
copper
is
formed
around
an
actual
claw
or
tooth
that has been
heavily
burned
. They
range
in
size
from
1.9
inches
(4.7
cm)
long
by
0.6
inches
(1.5
cm)
wide
to
2.2
inches
(5.7
cm)
long
by
0.7
inches
(1.7
cm)
wide
. The
Hopewell
inhabited
the
eastern
part
of what
is
now
the
United
States
from
100
B.C
. to
A.D
.
500
. They
lived
in
small
settlements
and
put
great
emphasis
on
burial
customs
and
mound
building
.
While
copper
objects
have been
found
at
many
Hopewell
earthwork
complexes
,
few
such
places
have
produced
as
many
in
such
a
small
area
as at
Mound
City
. The
Mound
City
Group
was a
rectangular
earthwork
consisting
of
twenty-four
mounds
.
Each
mound
covered
the
remains
of a
charnel
house
,
cremated
burials
, and
ritual
deposits
. The
remaining
mounds
can
be
found
just
north
of
Chillicothe
.
