Description
This
copper
head
plate
,
found
in the
Mound
City
complex
of
earthworks
near
Chillicothe
,
may
have been
part
of an
elaborate
Hopewell
headdress
.
Headdresses
were an
important
part
of
Hopewell
costumes
.
Many
head
plates
,
meant
to be
worn
along
the
top
of the
head
from
front
to
back
, have been
found
in
southern
Ohio
.
While
many
are
found
without
additional
attachments
,
some
are the
foundation
of
very
elaborate
headdresses
made
with
wood
,
feathers
,
fabric
,
leather
,
mica
,
pearls
, and
other
materials
. The
head
plate
shown
in this
photograph
was
found
on a
very
low
earthen
platform
near
cremated
remains
during
archaeological
excavations
in the
1920s
.
Three
sets
of
copper
deer
antlers
were also
found
on the
platform
and, with the
head
plate
,
may
have been
part
of an
antler
headdress
.
Interestingly
, this
burial
accounts
for
all
of
Mound
City's
copper
deer
antlers
. This
head
plate
is
9
inches
(22.8
cm)
long
,
7.5
inches
(19
cm)
wide
, and
weighs
4.8
ounces
(137
grams)
. The
Hopewell
inhabited
the
eastern
part
of what
is
now
the
United
States
from
100
B.C
. to
A.D
.
500
. They
lived
in
small
settlements
and
put
great
emphasis
on
burial
customs
and
mound
building
.
While
copper
objects
have been
found
at
many
Hopewell
earthwork
complexes
,
few
such
places
have
produced
as
many
in
such
a
small
area
as at
Mound
City
. The
Mound
City
Group
was a
rectangular
earthwork
consisting
of
twenty-four
mounds
.
Each
mound
covered
the
remains
of a
charnel
house
,
cremated
burials
, and
ritual
deposits
. The
remaining
mounds
can
be
found
just
north
of
Chillicothe
.
