This
plate
was
made
by the
Hopewell
between
200
B.C
. and
200
A.D
.
It
was
cold
hammered
from
nuggets
of
native
copper
imported
,
most
likely
, from the
Great
Lakes
area
.
Both
sides
of this
object
have
impressions
of
organic
materials
that were
present
at the
time
of
burial
. The
side
shown
in this
picture
is
covered
with
impressions
of
bird
feathers
and a
loose
fabric
or
netting
impression
is
visible
in the
lower
right
corner
. The
plate
is
11
inches
(27.9
cm)
long
,
5.7
in
(14.5
cm)
wide
, and
weighs
14
ounces
(398
grams)
. This
object
was
found
in
one
of the
ceremonial
buildings
within
the
thirteen-acre
Mound
City
earthwork
complex
near
Chillicothe
.
It
was
placed
on an
earthen
platform
within
the
ceremonial
building
,
suggesting
that
it
had
special
significance
to the
Hopewell
.
Numerous
other
objects
made
from
copper
,
obsidian
, and
mica
were also
found
on this
platform
in
association
with at
least
one
cremated
individual
. The
Hopewell
inhabited
the
eastern
part
of what
is
now
the
United
States
from
100
B.C
. to
A.D
.
500
. They
lived
in
small
settlements
and
put
great
emphasis
on
burial
customs
and
mound
building
.
While
copper
objects
have been
found
at
many
Hopewell
earthwork
complexes
,
few
such
places
have
produced
as
many
in
such
a
small
area
as at
Mound
City
. The
Mound
City
Group
was a
rectangular
earthwork
consisting
of
twenty-four
mounds
.
Each
mound
covered
the
remains
of a
charnel
house
,
cremated
burials
, and
ritual
deposits
. The
remaining
mounds
can
be
found
just
north
of
Chillicothe
.
