1903

parents

.
Flagler
,
who
was
73
years
old
at the
time
of the
visit
,
is
described
as "a
well
preserved
man.
"
Henry
M
.
Flagler
(1830-1913)
devised
Standard
Oil's
strategy
of
consolidating
small
oil
refineries
into the
Standard
Oil
trust
.
Born
in
Hopewell
,
New
York
,
Flagler
moved
to
Bellevue
,
Ohio
at the
age
of
fourteen
to
live
with his
mother's
relatives
and
work
as a
store
clerk
for
L.G
.
Harkness
.
Flagler
and his
half-brother
Dan
Harkness
established
their
own
firm
,
D.M
.
Harkness
and
Company
in
1852
.
One
of their
employees
was
John
D
.
Rockefeller
. In
1867
Flagler
was
placed
in
charge
of
Stephen
Harkness's
$100,000
investment
in
Rockefeller's
oil
business
, and
within
five
years
Rockefeller
and
Flagler
(later
Standard
Oil)
led
the
oil
refining
industry
.
Refusing
to
take
credit
for the
successful
strategies
of
Standard
Oil
,
Rockefeller
once
responded
, "
I
wish
I'd
had the
brains
to
think
of
it
.
It
was
Henry
M
.
Flagler.
"
Flagler
served
in
several
positions
at
Standard
Oil
,
including
vice-president
and
director
.
Later
in his
life
,
Flagler
invested
heavily
in the
development
southern
Florida
,
where
he
made
a
fortune
building
hotels
and
railroads
for
tourists
. He
died
on
May
20
,
1913
in
Palm
Beach
,
Florida
.
