Description |
Levi Hayes of DeGraff, Ohio owned this 1880 Columbia high-wheel bicycle. It measures 60" x 72" (152.4 x 182.88 cm). Before the release of "safety" bicycles, which had two wheels of the same size, bicycling required great athletic skill. The League of American Wheelmen, the first bicycle club in the United States, formed in 1880. By the 1890s, a "bicycle craze" had spread across the nation. According to historian Eugene Sloane: "by 1896 the watch and jewelry business had fallen almost to zero, piano sales had been cut in half, and book sales had dropped disastrously. Apparently, no one stayed home and played the piano or read, and instead of buying jewelry, people bought bicycles." |
