built

1811
, a
frame
home
with a
parlor/dining
room
,
kitchen
,
master
bedroom
and
children's
room
. An
addition
was
built
in
1816
to
include
a
parlor
and
study
for
father
,
Judge
Charles
Sherman
. A
brick
front
was
added
in
70
. The
addition
was
undoubtedly
needed
to
accommodate
the
eleven
children
of
Charles
and
Mary
(Hoyt)
Sherman
.
Sherman
was a
graduate
of
West
Point
and
served
under
U
.
S
.
Grant
in
1862
and
1863
. In
1863
, he
succeeded
General
Grant
as the
commander
of the
western
theater
of the
war
. He
led
his
troops
through
Georgia
and the
Carolinas
in the
famous
"
March
to the
Sea
". In
April
1865
, he
accepted
the
surrender
of the
Confederates
armies
in
Carolinas
,
Georgia
and
Florida
.
Sherman
died
in
New
York
City
on
Feb
14
,
1891
.
After
a
memorial
service
there, his
body
was
transported
in a
military
procession
to
St
Louis
,
where
he was
buried
in
Calvary
Cemetery
. He and his
wife
Ellen
(Ewing)
Sherman
lived
much
of their
married
life
in
St
Louis
.
