Description
The
first
stone
school
house
of the
Union
School
in
Amherst
,
Ohio
was a
clay-brick
building
that
measured
25
by
40
feet
. This
original
stone
school
building
burned
down
on
July
5
,
1893
. The
second
building
was
constructed
of
Amherst
sandstone
but
again
was
destroyed
by
fire
on
March
3
,
1907
.
Central
School
was
again
rebuilt
in
1908
at the
same
Church
Street
location
.
During
construction
,
classes
were
held
in
other
available
buildings
including
the
town
hall
and
public
library
.
School
enrollment
at that
time
was
810
students
. The
first
class
to
graduate
from the
finished
building
was in
1909
.

Central
School
was
built
of
Amherst
sandstone
.
Stone
cutters
worked
on
site
to
carve
the
stone
during
construction
. The
original
building
contained
thirteen
classrooms
, a
large
study
hall
, and a
library
.
Fifteen
years
later
a
large
addition
was
planned
. A
home
located
behind
the
current
school
and
owned
by
Fred
Powers
,
Superintendent
of
Schools
, was
removed
to
make
room
for the
addition
. The
finished
building
contained
many
more
classrooms
, a
gymnasium-auditorium
,
industrial
arts
shop
,
home
economics
department
,
cafeteria
, and
science
laboratories
. The
home
economics
department
ran
the
school
lunch
program
for
many
years
until
a
full-time
cook
was
hired
in
1950
.
Before
the
addition
, a
community
sponsored
gymnasium
attached
to the
nearby
Congregational
Church
was
used
for
athletic
events
. The
class
of
1927
was the
first
to
graduate
from
Central
School's
auditorium
. A
large
grinding
stone
in the
front
yard
of the
school
is
believed
not to be
local
sandstone
but a
corn
grinding
mill
stone
thought
to have
come
from
France
.

in
1987
