Description |
This broadside lists the official program for Labor Day festivities in Newark, Ohio, including a parade and Grand Ball. Entertainment included a "high diving dog" watermelon contest, and parachute drop. The events, sponsored by the Newark Trades Union and Labor Council, ended with a band concert and fireworks. The broadside is one page and measures 6" x 9.25" (15.24 x 23.5 cm). Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City in September 1882 and was arranged by the Central Labor Union. The union organized a festive street parade, followed by recreational activities. The parade was intended to demonstrate the "strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations." By 1886, the holiday had grown in popularity and was recognized by some cities. In 1894, Congress passed legislation making the first Monday of September the Labor Day holiday. |
