Sill
(1831-1862)
, a
native
of
Chillicothe
, was
killed
at the
Battle
of
Stone's
River
outside
of
Murfreesboro
,
Tennessee
.
Despite
his
gentle
personality
,
Sill
excelled
at
West
Point
where
he
graduated
third
in his
class
. He
remained
in the
army
until
1861
,
where
he
spent
most
of his
time
teaching
at
West
Point
. He
resigned
in
1861
and
accepted
a
position
teaching
mathematics
at the
Collegiate
and
Polytechnic
Institute
of
Brooklyn
,
New
York
.
Sill
resigned
this
position
at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
and
returned
to
Ohio
where
he was
commissioned
as a
lieutenant
colonel
. He
served
as
aide
to
General
George
B
.
McClellan
.
Early
in the
war
,
Sill
fought
in
minor
battles
in
Kentucky
and
Alabama
. In
July
1862
, he was
promoted
to
brigadier
general
and was
later
given
command
of a
brigade
in
General
Phil
Sheridan's
army
. He was
killed
by
rifle
fire
while
leading
his
men
into
battle
on
December
31
,
1862
. This
photograph
was
probably
taken
during
the
summer
of
1861
while
Sill
was in
Portsmouth
recruiting
troops
for the
33rd
O
.
V
.
