Abraham
Monnett
(1811-1881)
and his
first
wife
,
Catherine
Baucher
Monnett
(1815-1875)
,
settled
in
Marion
County
,
Ohio
.
Catherine
Monnett’s
dowry
would
become
the
foundation
of the
family’s
wealth
.
Using
the
dowry
,
Abraham
purchased
land
in
Grand
and
Scott
Prairie
Townships
in
Marion
County
, and in
Dallas
and
Bucyrus
Townships
in
Crawford
County
,
Ohio
. He
eventually
owned
12,000
acres
of
productive
farmland
and
grazing
land
and also
founded
the
Monnett
Bank
(predecessor
of
Bucyrus
City
Bank
,
later
the
United
Bank
of
Bucyrus)
. The
couple
had
twelve
children
. In
1887
,
two
years
after
Catherine’s
death
,
Abraham
Monnett
married
Jane
Ludwig
Johnston
,
widow
of
Henry
D.E
.
Johnston

several
young
daughters
.
Abraham

Street
. The
previous
owner
,
Horace
Rowse
,
built

Ridge
, a
brick-and-cedar-shingle
house
, in
1868
.
Rose
Ridge
occupied
a
large
lot
, and its
spacious
interior
provided
plenty
of
room
for
entertaining
. Its
size
and
décor
also
made
Rose
Ridge
a
prestigious
residence
for the
Monnett
clan
;
it
was the
largest
house
in
Bucyrus
for
many
years
.
After
Abraham
died
in
1881
,
Jane
remained
at
Rose
Ridge
. In
1903
a
fire
destroyed
much
of the
house
, but she
rebuilt
her
home
and
lived
there
until
her
death
in
1912
. The
house
was
sold
to the
International
Order
of the
King’s
Daughters
and
Sons
, an
interdenominational
Christian
service
organization
whose
Ohio
branch
was
founded
in
1888
. The
house
was
razed
during
the
1950s
.
Maplecrest

Living
facility
,
operated
by the

,
now
