York

Burr
served
as the
Vice
President
to
Thomas
Jefferson
in
1800
after
tying
on
electoral
votes
, but
losing
in the
House
of
Representatives
.
Near
the
end
of his
term
as
Vice
President
,
after
failing
to
win
the
renomination
,
Burr
dueled
and
killed
Alexander
Hamilton
,
whom
he
blamed
for his
political
problems
.
After
leaving
the
vice
presidency
,
Burr
convinced
Ohioan
Harman
Blennerhassett
to
participate
in an
attempted
rebellion
against
the
United
States
. In
September
1806
,
Blennerhassett
ordered
the
construction
of
fifteen
boats
,
which
the
men
planned
to
use
to
transport
up
to
five
hundred
followers
.
Blennerhassett
spent
much
of his
fortune
paying
for the
planned
expedition
. The
United
States
government
heard
of the
uprising
and
took
the
rumors
seriously
.
Governor
Edward
Tiffin
of
Ohio
dispatched
the
state's
militia
to
Blennerhassett's
home
at the
convergence
of the
Muskingum
and
Ohio
Rivers
, with
orders
to
stop
all
river
traffic
traveling
down
the
two
rivers
. The
government
also
sent
a
detachment
of
Virginia
militia
to
seize
Blennerhassetts
'
home
on an
island
in the
Ohio
River
.
Burr
was
arrested
and was
charged
with
treason
,
only
to be
found
innocent
in a
trial
presided
over
by
Supreme
Court
Chief
Justice
John
Marshall
.
