A host of friends were shocked and saddened by 4the unexpected death Sunday of Michael Reed Applegate, five months old son of Staff Sgt. John Applegate and Alyce Bohling Applegate.
The baby, apparently in excel¬ lent health, became ill Saturday night and died late Sunday after¬ noon at M&gruder hospital. An , autopsy revealed that a virus in !the blood stream had caused a telescoping of the small intestine into the large intestine. / . Sgt. Applegate^ U. S. Marine

Corps, stationed at a hospital in Atsu, Japan, was contacted through the Red Cross. A * call from the overseas operator Wed¬ nesday morning notified the family that he had left for home. _
Funeral services tor baby Mich¬ ael were deferred until Friday at 2 p.m. in hopes that he could ¦ get here. Services will be from the Bay township home of Mr. - and Mrs. Albert Bohling, parents of- Mrs. Applegate, with burial in Lakeview cemetery. •¦&./]

The oabj^ was born Sept. * 13* 1950, at Camp LeJeune, North Caroline, and Sgt. Applegate' was overseas then. He was later wound¬ ed in* action and on recovery wast assigned to the Japanese hospital.! Paternal grandparents of Michael' are Mr. and( Mrs. Robert Applet gate, of Lisbon. Mrs. Bohling had! been living here with her parents! since Michael's birth. j
'Sgt. Applegate was notified by cablegram, through the Red Cross, . of the baby's death. A telephone call was put through' for him Tues-, day afternoon. At 1:30 a.m. Wed¬ nesday, the family was notified, that lines were down at Atsu, but an effort to reach him by mes¬ senger was being made, and at 7- a.m. another message came that he had left for home.
