Description
This
portrait
of a
Native
American
woman
is
believed
to be
Mary
Elizabeth
'
Betsy
'
Mo-John
, the
last
member
of the
Ottawa
Tribe
to
live
in
Ottawa
County
. There
is
some
contention
regarding
the
authenticity
of the
image
because
of the
timing
involved
.
It
is
believed
that
Betsy
was
born
in
1813
and
since
the
first
camera
patent
was
issued
until
1840
,
Betsy
would have been at
least
27
if not
much
older
by the
time
a
camera
studio
came
to
Ohio
. The
woman
in the
picture
appears
to be
too
young
.
However
,
since
her
date
of
birth
and the
date
of the
photograph
are
both
unknown
,
many
local
historians
take
this to be
authentic
.
According
to the
Ottawa
County
marriage
records
,
Betsy
married
Henry
Luckart
on
May
1st
,
1852
by
Justice
of the
Peace
,
H.J
.
Miller
.
Luckart
built
Betsy
a
six-room
cabin
on
Catawba
Island
.
Henry
Luckart
died
of an
apparent
suicide
on
December
22nd
,
1874
.
Betsy
later
married
Henry
Bonnet
, the
owner
of
Bogart's
Corner
saloon
. She
died
in
1908
and was
buried
in
Bloomingdale
Cemetery
in
Erie
County
,
Ohio
. Her
obituary
was
published
on
January
24th
,
1908
in the
Port
Clinton
Herald
and
read
, '
Bonnet
,
Mrs
.
Betsy
died.Better
known
in the
Catawba
area
as
Betsy
Luckart
,
who
is
well
remembered
by the
oldest
citizens
here. She was a
full-blooded
indian
woman
and was the
daughter
of the
last
chief
of the
Ottawa
tribe
inhabiting
Catawba
Island
,
many
years
ago
. In her
early
days
, she
married
Henry
Luckart
, a
German
, and
lived
in
our
midst
for
many
years
. The
old
log
house
the
built
and
occupied
is
still
standing
and
is
now
owned
by
Mrs
.
Burgderfer
.
After
several
years
of
married
life
Mr
.
Luckart
died
and
after
a
few
years
of
widowhood
,
Mrs
.
Luckart
married
Henry
Bonnet
, of
Bogart
,
Ohio
near
Sandusky
, with
whom
she
live
29
years
previous
to her
death
.
While
living
on
Catawba
,
Mrs
.
Luckart
took
and
raised
a
white
child
,
Nettie
Jewett
,
whose
mother
died
in her
infancy
.
When
about
15
years
of
age
,
Mr
Jewett
came
from the
east
and
claimed
his
daughter
, and
took
her
home
to
Connecticut
with him,
where
she has
lived
married
and
made
her
home
. She
didn't
forget
her
foster
mother
and has
visited
occasionally
.
Mrs
.
Bonnet
didn't
know
her
age
, but
it
was
thought
that she was
over
95
years
.
Funeral
took
place
January
21
from the
family
residence
.
Buried
in
Bloomingville
Cemetery.
' The
cabin
that
Betsy
lived
in was
later
donated
to the
Ottawa
County
Historical
Society
and
moved
to
Mon
Ami
Winery
in
1968
.
It
is
now
on the
register
of
historic
places
.
