This
ambrotype
is
a
portrait
of
Robert
Niesel
of
Cincinnati
,
Ohio
at
approximately
22
years
of
age
. He
is
seated
,
wearing
a
military
uniform
, the
metallic
pieces
of
which
have been
embellished
with
gold
leaf
. His
arm
reaches
across
his
chest
,
drawing
a
sword
from its
sheath
.
Niesel
(sometimes
spelled
as
Neasel
or
Neasell)
, was
born
in
Breslau
,
Prussia
in
1838
. He
enlisted
as a
Private
, at
age
21
, in the
Union
Army
with the the
1st
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(OVI)
,
Company
B
on
16
April
1861
,
signing
for a
three
month
term
of
service
. He
mustered
out
with his
company
on
August
16
,
1861
in
Dayton
,
Ohio
. On
August
22
,
1861
Niesel
then
reenlisted
in the
1st
Regiment
,
United
States
Artillery
,
Company
E
of the
Regular
Army
, in
which
he would
serve
until
being
mustered
out
on
February
7
,
1867
. His
discharge
papers
describe
Niesel
as
approximately
25
years
of
age
,
5
feet
6
3/4
inches
tall
, with
dark
complexion
,
hazel
eyes
,
brown
hair
, and
upon
enlistment
his
career
was
listed
as
soldier
.
During
his
service
he was
promoted
from
Private
to
Artificer
(a
skilled
mechanic
; in
military
terms
a
soldier
involved
with
explosives)
.
It
is
most
likely
he
lost
the
index
finger
on his
left
hand
, and
part
of
three
fingers
on his
right
,
during
this
period
. On
October
6
,
1868
Robert
Niesel
became
a
naturalized
citizen
of the
United
States
. He
petitioned
The
State
of
Ohio
,
Hamilton
County
Probate
Court
for
citizenship
on the
grounds
of his
military
service
. He was
successful
and
renounced
his
allegiance
to the
King
of
Prussia
,
thereafter
to
remain
a
citizen
of the
United
States
. On
July
7
,
1896
Robert
Niesel
was
admitted
into the
United
States
National
Homes
for
Disabled
Volunteer
Soldiers
in
Grant
County
,
Marion
,
Indiana
.
Upon
admittance
he
listed
the
loss
of his
fingers
in
addition
to
rheumatism
and
hemorrhoids
. He was
discharged
at
request
on
February
17
,
1909
.
February
7
,
1911
found
Robert
re-admitted
to the
United
States
National
Homes
for
Disabled
Volunteer
Soldiers
in
Montgomery
County
,
Dayton
,
Ohio
. He
died
in
Dayton
,
Ohio
on
April
6
,
1911
with a
total
of
$51.93
on his
persons
. His
wife
was
notified
by
telegraph
at
9
o’clock
on the
morning
of
April
7
,
1911
. He
is
buried
at
Dayton
National
Cemetery
