Description
This
historical
Staffordshire
transfer-printed
whiteware
pitcher
is
attributed
to the
James
and
Ralph
Clews
pottery
in
Cobridge
,
England
.
Produced
between
1820-1840
, the
blue-and-white
vessel's
border
is
decorated
with
large
and
small
flowers
. The
source
of the
main
image
(on
the
side)
is
a
drawing
and
engraving
by
Samuel
Maverick
,
depicting
the
landing
of
General
Lafayette
at
Castle
Garden
in
New
York
Bay
. This
scene
has a
roadway
and
dock
in the
foreground
. The
ship
Lafayette
used
on his
15-day
tour
, the
Cadmus
,
is
docked
, and
several
other
ships
can
be
seen
in the
harbor
. The
Castle
Garden
is
shown
next
to the
Cadmus
,
connected
to the
mainland
by a
footbridge
. At the
bottom
of the
picture
are the
words
"

"
Marquis
de
Lafayette
(1757-1834)
was
born
into a
wealthy
French
family
and
became
the
first
Frenchman
to
come
to the
aid
of the
American
Revolutionary
cause
. He
studied
at the
Military
Academy
in
Versailles
and
came
to
North
America
in
1777
.
Later
that
year
, the
United
States
Congress
commissioned
Lafayette
a
major
general
of the
Continental
Army
,
assigning
him to the
staff
of
George
Washington
. He
later
persuaded
the
French
government
to
send
aid
to the
Americans
.
Lafayette
returned
to
America
between
1824-1825
for a
tour
of
twenty-four
states
,
during
which
he was
welcomed
as a
hero
.
