Description
According
to
Swiss
Community
Historical
Society
president
Phil
Kingsley
, this
photograph
,
dating
from the
late
1800s
or
early
1900s
,
is
of "the
barn
belonging
to the
Swiss
Community
Historical
Society
at its
historical
Schumacher
Farmstead
site
at
8350
Bixel
Road
,
Bluffton
,
Ohio
(between
Bluffton
and
Pandora)
.
It
was
built
in
1854
and
is
one
of the
oldest
barns
in this
community
.
It
is
a
bank
barn
with the
bank
on the
south
side
leading
up
to the
two
big
barn
doors
. In the
photo
a
threshing
crew
is
at
work
with a
steam
engine
parked
at the
base
of the
bank
and a
long
flat
belt
running
up
into the
barn
powering
a
threshing
machine
parked
on the
main
floor
of the
barn
.
Grain
(most
likely
wheat)
is
being
threshed
(separated
,
cleaned
, and
put
into the
granary)
with the
straw
blown
out
an
opening
on the
other
side
of the
barn
and onto a
straw
stack
.
Originally
this
barn
had a
nearly
unique
design
in that
it
had
two
banks
,
one
on the
east
end
of the
barn
and
one
on the
west
end
.
Wagons
pulled
by
horses
could
be
driven
in from
one
end
,
unloaded
, and then
driven
on
through
and
out
the
other
end
. The
east
and
west
banks
were
removed
and
replaced
by the
single
south
side
bank
when
hay
tracks
came
into
use
. The
hay
track
hangs
from
end
to
end
just
under
the
roof
peak
of the
barn
.
Using
horse
or
tractor
power
,
loads
of
hay
can
be
lifted
off
a
wagon
by
slings
or
hay
forks
attached
to
ropes
and
pulleys
hanging
from a
car
mounted
on the
track
. The
load
of
hay
can
then be
run
down
the
track
to
one
or
other
end
of the
barn
and
dumped
in a
hay
mow.

following
names
were
written
on the
back
of the
original
photograph

,
Herman
Schumacher
, and
