front

Krebs
office
, in what was
formerly
the
Elmore
Automobile
Plant
on
Amanda
Street
. The
Krebs
Commercial
Car
Company
was
incorporated
in
early
1912
by
B.A
.
Becker
,
J.C.L
.
Krebs
,
Frank
Baechle
-
all
former
managers
of the
Elmore
Automobile
Co
.
-
local
attorney
Homer
Metzgar
and
local
businessman
George
Slessman
. By
May
,
1912
, the
first
commercial
vehicle
capable
for
carrying
loads
of
1500
to
2000
pounds
was
being
test
driven
. In
October
,
1912
, the
Amanda
Street
factory
was
purchased
. In
November
1913
a
patent
for a
governor
was
received
. In
1917
,
Krebs
Commercial
Car
Company
reorganized
,
changed
its
name
to The
Clyde
Cars
Company
, and
merged
with the
Lincoln
Motor
Truck
Company
of
Detroit
.
Early
Clydesdales
were
mainly
shipped
overseas
as the
company
had
developed
a
large
export
business
. A
large
order
of
trucks
for the
war
effort
was
cancelled
by the
U.S
.
Government
in
1918
, but the
company
sold
150
trucks
to the
Postal
Service
,
sent
200
trucks
to
Japan
, and at the
end
of
1919
once
again
changed
its
name
: to the
Clydesdale
Motor
Truck
Company
. In
receivership
in
late
1925
, the
corporation
was
purchased
by
private
individuals
and
continued
in
business
,
eventually
working
with
diesel
engines
and
developing
four
and
six
wheel
heavy-duty
vehicles
in
attempts
to
obtain
Navy
and
Army
contracts
. The
company
was
dissolved
in
1939
.
