HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Daniel and John McCook, born in Pennsylvania in 1798 and 1806 respectively, settled at Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, in 1826. Shortly thereafter, Daniel moved to Carrollton, Carroll County, and several years later, John moved to Steubenville. Both men were prominent in their communities; Daniel served as Carroll County’s first clerk of the court of common pleas, and John practiced medicine at Lisbon and Steubenbville. During the Civil War, Daniel sent eight of his sons, and all five of John’s sons joined the Union Army. The families became known as “ The Fighting McCooks”.
