Society

American
cartoonist
Milton
Caniff
was
born
in
Hillsboro
,
Highland
County
,
Ohio
, on
February
28
,
1907
. He was the
only
child
of
John
William
Caniff
and
Elizabeth
Burton
Caniff
. In
1919
, the
Caniff
family
moved
to
Dayton
,
Ohio
,
where
Milton
attended
Ruskin
Elementary
School
. In that
same
year
he
joined
the
Boy
Scouts
, an
organization
that
influenced
him, and
one
in
which
he
participated
, his
entire
life
. In
1921
, he
entered
Dayton’s
Stivers
Manual
High
School
,
where
he
met
his
influential
art
teacher
,
Martha
K
.
Schauer
, and
drew
the
comic
strip
“Chic
and
Noodles”
for the
school
newspaper
. He
graduated
in
1925
and
enrolled
at
Ohio
State
University
(OSU)
,
where
he
majored
in
fine
arts
. At
OSU
,
Caniff
pledged
the
Sigma
Chi
fraternity
,
appeared
in
campus
theater
productions
,
created
artwork
for the
yearbook
, and
worked
part-time
in the
art
department
at the
Columbus
Dispatch
with the
well-known
cartoonist
Billy
Ireland
. In
1930
,
Milton
Caniff
graduated
from
Ohio
State
,
married
his
Dayton
high
school
sweetheart
,
Esther
“Bunny”
Parsons
, and
began
full-time
work
at the
Dispatch
.
When
the
Depression
hit
in
1932
, the
Dispatch
laid
off
Milton
Caniff
;
later
that
year
he
accepted
a
position
in the
art
department
at the
Associated
Press
in
New
York
,
producing
a
series
of
comic
strips
.
Caniff
is
best
remembered
for his
comic
strips
“Terry
and the
Pirates,”
“Male
Call,”
and
“Steve
Canyon.”
Throughout
his
life
he
received
numerous
awards
for his
cartoon
work
, his
involvement
with
U.S
.
military
branches
, and his
dedication
to the
Boy
Scouts
of
America
.
Milton
Caniff
died
on
Easter
Sunday
,
April
3
,
1988
.
