Edith
Matilda
Thomas
(1854-1925)
was
born
in
Medina
County
. Her
family
moved
to
Bowling
Green
in
1859
.
After
the
death
of her
father
in
1861
,
Thomas
and her
mother
and
sisters
moved
to
Geneva
,
Ohio
. Her
first
poems
were
published
in the
Geneva
Times
.
Thomas
attended
Geneva
schools
and was a
member
of the
first
graduating
class
of
Geneva
High
School
in
1872
. She
later
lived
in
New
York
and
published
dozens
of
poems
in
newspapers
and
periodicals
,
including
The
Critic
,
Atlantic
Monthly
, The
Weekly
Magazine
, The
Acorn
, and The
Cottage
Hearth
.
Some
of her
subjects
were
nature
,
mythological
studies
,
fable
and
legend
, and
Lake
Erie
.
Besides
her
many
poems
,
Thomas
authored
sixteen
books
. Her
work
was
highly
praised
in
England
and
America
. In a
Cleveland
Plain
Dealer
article
titled
"
One
of
America's
Most
Gifted
Women
"
journalist
Archie
Bell
wrote
, "Her
pen
has not been a
prolific
one
, but in
range
of
literary
thought
and
expression
she has
eclipsed
anything
done
by a
woman
since
the
work
of
Elizabeth
Barrett
Browning.
