Description	This 5" x 7" (12.7 x 17.8 cm) photograph shows the entrance to the Huron, Ohio harbor. The second Huron lighthouse is shown on the left. In the 1880s Huron's harbor brought prosperity to the town. With the completion of iron and coal docks by the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad, Huron again became an important Lake port, as it had been in the 1820s and 1830s, when Huron's shipbuilding industry boomed. In 1883, the first schooner load of iron ore arrived in Huron on the L.C. Butts. A second 9" x 5" (22.86 x 12.7 cm) photograph shows a worker at the harbor. By the 1880s, cargo was no longer loaded and unloaded by wheelbarrows. Derricks, or large crane-like machines with one-ton buckets attached, were used to unload ships. Several of the buckets, or whirlies, are shown in this photograph. Workers were paid at the rate of fourteen cents a ton for unloading ore by hand into the buckets. The men worked in gangs of 21 to 42 workers. The foreman kept track of the tonnage and would distribute pay after receiving the amount due to his gang from the dock offices.
