Description	Four silver gelatin prints, each 6.25 by 8 inches (15.88 by 20.32 cm), relate to the Hughes Granite and Marble Company of Clyde, Ohio. Depicted are the modeling room where plaster of paris molds were made, the marker stockyard where slabs of granite were kept, the main office, and the grave marker showroom. These images are part of a larger collection of Hughes Granite and Marble Company Records held by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. Founded in 1878, the Hughes Granite and Marble Company, located on East Buckeye Street in Clyde, built monuments, markers, and mausoleums. William E. Hughes incorporated the company in 1893, following the death of his brother-in-law Carmi Sanford, who started the business. Hughes Granite and Marble became one of the best-known companies of its kind and sold its products throughout the Midwest. It purchased stone from quarries in Scotland, New York, and New England. The company created many Civil War monuments, including ones at Andersonville, Vicksburg, Antietam, and Shiloh.
