Athens County (Ohio)
Description
These are the
probate
records
of
Henry
Wells
, an
Athens
County
merchant
who
in
1860
endowed
the
creation
of a
library
in
Albany
,
Ohio
. His
actions
were
significant
because
it
was
unusual
for a
small
town
to have a
public
library
at
such
an
early
date
. The
file
contains
his will and
materials
relating
to his
mother
Mary
Wethee's
role
as
executor
. The
nine
pages
range
in
size
from
8.05
x
4.76
inches
(20.44
x
12.09
cm)
to
8.1
x
12.44
inches
(20.57
x
31.59
cm)
.
All
of the
documents
are
contained
in a
packet
measuring
7.95
x
9.52
inches
(20.19
x
24.18
cm)
.
Wells
died
in
1860
of
consumption
at
age
28
.
Regretting
his
lack
of a
formal
education
, he
frequently
spoke
of his
desire
to
establish
a
library
in
Albany
. In his will he
left
$1000
as an
endowment
for the
library
and
$250
for the
immediate
purchase
of
books
.
