Description	These eight letters were written by Horton Howard, a Quaker settler in the Mt. Pleasant area, to his friend Thomas Rotch in Kendal (now Massillon). The first asks about a letter from other Quaker friends. In the second letter regarding the manufacture of fine ware, Howard answers Rotch's request for more information about manufacturing tableware and tells him that rather than have this information fall into the hands of a competitor, Howard would prefer to discuss the subject in person. In the next letter, dated October 1819, Howard discusses personal affairs and illness in the area of Mt. Pleasant, and asks Thomas Rotch's recommendations for what aid might be given to Indians. The next two letters deal with Howard's appointment as a land agent for the state of Ohio. He asked Rotch for a recommendation for the post, and then moved to Delaware, Ohio to accept the position. Two other letters written while Howard was in Delaware discuss the sale of Howard's property, details of Quaker committees and meetings that Howard has attended, and purchase of land by Quaker Friends from New York. The final letter from 1823 was written after rumors that cast a pale light on some aspects of Horton Howard's character surfaced. The letters are between one and three pages and measure approximately 8" x 12" (20.32 x 30.48 cm). Horton Howard, along with Joseph Dew and Aaron Brown, were delegates from the monthly Quaker meeting in Carteret County, North Carolina who were sent to survey the Ohio country in 1800 with prospects of settling in the Northwest Territory. The delegates arrived in the Short Creek region of what is now Jefferson and Belmont counties and were impressed with the natural resources of the area. They convinced several North Carolina Quaker families to move north. By the close of 1800, there were eight hundred families of Friends in the Ohio Country.

Full Text	[page 1] [corresponds to page 1 of Horton Howard Letter to Thomas Rotch, November 16, 1813] Esteemed Friend Locust Grove 11th Mo 26th 1813 Jonathan Taylor called on me a few days since for the names of the friends who were appointed correspondents for our yearly meeting in and near Lon- -don I gave them to him to forward to thee, but I did not recollect that thou would want the Letter we had written to send to them and thought of sending it by Post but having an opportunity by R. Willi -ams I enclose it to thee. I have sometime since forwarded by D. Haviland a copy of it to Gerard T. Hopkins of Baltimore with a request to convey it it he had a suitable opportunity but I think it probable by sending it to thy Brother it may get more certainly along. I was very desirous of having an oppurtunity of enjoying a little more of your society at Kendal this fall, but I have found so much which necessarily required my attention at home that I am under the necessity of relinquishing the Idea of it at present. I hope thou wilt not fail to be with us at our next meeting for sufferings, and bring Charity with thee we wish to have more of your company at our humble habitation at Locust Grove at that time or sooner if convenient.
