Description
Three
photographs
show
the
Hebrew
Cultural
Garden
in
Cleveland
,
which
was
dedicated
in
1926
. The
dedication
coincided
with the
visit
of
poet
Chime
Nichimen
Bialy
. The
garden
symbolizes
the
Star
of
David
. In the
center
of the
garden
is
a
marble
fountain
on
seven
marble
pillars
,
representing
the
seven
pillars
of
wisdom
. At
four
points
of the
Star
of
David
are
bronze
portrait
reliefs
of
Jewish
philosophers
and
scholars
. These
photographs

Jewish
immigration
to
Cleveland
, as
elsewhere
in
America
,
can
be
divided
into
two
distinct
,
overlapping
periods
. These are the
German
era
(1837-1900)
,
when
Jewish
Germans
immigrated
, and the
East
European
era
(1870-1924)
,
which
saw
Jewish
people
immigrating
from
Russia
,
Poland
, and
Romania
. The
social
and
cultural
character
of the
two
groups
differed
markedly
, and
through
the
mid-1930s
they
most
often
developed
parallel
and
separate
institutions
and
communities
. The
first
Jews
in
Cleveland
settled
near
the
Central
Market
,
generally
east
of the
river
,
where
they
built
their
first
institutions
. As the
Jewish
community
grew
and
businesses
expanded
,
young
or
newly-arrived
Jews
received
their
business
training
as
clerks
or
bookkeepers
in the
firms
of
relatives
or
landsmen
. As this
community's
population
increased
and
gained
greater
wealth
,
Jews
moved
eastward
along
Woodland
and
Central
,
eventually
moving
to the
Heights
and
eastern
suburbs
where
they had to
wage
court
battles
to
secure
building
rights
for
Jewish
institutions
. The
Cleveland
Cultural
Gardens
,
located
along
East
Boulevard
and
Martin
Luther
King
Jr
.
Boulevard
, are
landscaped
gardens
with
statuary
honoring
Cleveland's
ethnic
groups
.
During
the
dedication
of the
Shakespeare
Garden
in
1916
,
it
was
decided
that
similar
sites
should be
prepared
for
each
of the
city's
ethnic
communities
. The
first
of these
gardens
, the
Hebrew
garden
, was
established
in
1926
. On
May
9
,
1927
the
city
set
aside
areas
of
Rockefeller
Park
for
future
gardens
. The
Italian
,
German
,
Lithuanian
,
Slovak
, and
Ukrainian
gardens
were
established
in
1930
; the
Polish
,
Hungarian
,
Czech
, and
Yugoslav
gardens
in
1934
; and the
American
,
Russian
,
Irish
,
Greek
, and
Syrian
gardens
in
1938
.
Romanian
,
Estonian
,
Afro-American
,
Chinese
,
Finnish
, and
Indian
gardens
have
since
been
created
.
Planning
and
fundraising
for
each
garden
was
undertaken
within
the
ethnic
communities
,
while
the
Cleveland
Cultural
Garden
Federation
(established
in
1925)
oversaw
planning
and
coordinated
various
joint
programs
.
