Description	This 1896 catalog, which measures 9 by 12 inches (22.86 by 30.48 cm) was one of the first published by the A.H. Heisey Company of Newark, Ohio. The company made catalogs and price lists available to company salespeople and retail stores that sold the goods to consumers. Twenty-eight pages (with cover) included here show the variety of items available in two of the pressed glass patterns made by the company, #1201 Fandango and #1205 Fancy Loop. Pressed glass was made to resemble the more expensive cut glass popular at the time. It is made by pouring molten glass into a mold and applying pressure to force the glass into the desired shape. Tableware for entertaining was elaborate around the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to standard table items, the company produced pieces specifically designed to serve mustard, pickles, celery, olives, custard, and jelly. Dishes for salt, sugar, nuts, and butter were produced in both large and individual-serving sizes. Bowls, called nappies, also came in multiple sizes. Augustus H. Heisey (1842-1922) founded the company that bore his name in 1896. Born in Germany, Heisey's family emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1843. He began his career in glassmaking in 1861, working for several glass companies in the state. During the Civil War, Heisey served in the 155th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. In the 1890s, he decided to start his own company and selected Newark for his factory because natural gas and low-cost labor were abundant. The factory, located at 301 Oakwood Avenue, opened in 1896. In its early years, the company made only pressed ware table items in a variety of patterns and colors. In the twentieth century, Heisey expanded its production to include blown glassware, which is shaped by hand tools and craftsmen's lungs. Augustus Heisey's sons ran the company after his death. The factory ceased production in 1957.
