Description	The Hecla Iron Furnace was one of the best-known furnaces in the United States. It gained much of its fame during the Civil War, when iron from Hecla Furnace was used as armor on the gunboats that stormed Fort Henry and Fort Donaldson. Perhaps the most famous weapon made of Hecla iron was the "Swamp Angel" which threw a 100-pound shell 5.5 miles, which was considered a remarkable feat in the 1860s. These three newspaper articles from the Ironton Register document the history of the furnace. An October 21, 1852 article states that the furnace is for sale as part of the estate of Henry Blake. An article dated October 28, 1852 states that the furnace has been sold to John Campbell, C. Briggs, and E. H. Griswold. A Register article from September 3, 1885 predicts that the furnace will make 2000 tons of iron.
