Description	Fletcher, Ohio resident Alexander Gump patented his combined harvester and thresher in September 1897 and had constructed a working version by 1902. One of Gump's 10.25" by 15.5" engineering (26.04 by 39.37 cm) drawings of the machine is shown here, as well as a 6.25" by 5.25" (15.88 by 13.34 cm) photograph of a demonstration of the machine at W. Burbon Garbry's farm in Piqua on July 16, 1902. A 1902 newspaper account of the machine explained how it worked: "The general plan of the machine is as follows: the grain is cut by an ordinary reaping arrangement and elevated on a canvas and is then passed between two rubber rollers which loosen the husks. From here it passes through a peculiar threshing arrangement which remove[s] the grain from the straw. At this point the straw is thrown out of the back of the machine. At the same time the grain is dropped on a screen and it is cleaned by a blast of air. The shaft is blown away and the grain is dropped on an elevator which carries it to an automatic sacker."
