Description
These
four
flour
sacks
were
produced
by the
Heabler
&
Heabler
Flour
Mill
in
Attica
,
Ohio
. In
1860
,
Christian
Link
built
the
Attica
Flour
Mill
near
the
site
of a
sawmill
that was
destroyed
by
fire
in
1840
.
John
Heabler
and his
brothers
purchased
the
mill
in
1862
; the
name
was
changed
to
Heabler
and
Heabler
in
1899
.
It
produced
pancake
,
pastry
,
buckwheat
, and
graham
flours
and
ground
cornmeal
. The
flour
sacks
measure
between
12
"
x
18
"
(30.48
x
45.72
cm)
and
24
"
x
36
"
(60.96
x
91.44
cm)
.
During
World
War
I
, the
mill
loaded
a
railroad
car
with
310
barrels
of
Pure
Gold
Flour
,
bought
by the
government
to
feed
soldiers
in
France
.
Heabler
and
Heabler
,
like
many
other
companies
during
the
war
, was
required
to
sell
30%
of its
output
to the
government
to
help
with the
war
effort
. The
mill
operated
until
1952
,
when
it
was
sold
to
Warren
Thompson
.
It
shut
down
in
1970
and was
razed
in
2002
.
