Description	The fortune that Cooke made in the banking business allowed him to purchase Gibraltar Island in 1864. Located in the Put-in -Bay harbor in Lake Erie, the island became a retreat for the Cooke family and their wealthy guests. Cooke began keeping a journal of his family's visits to Gibraltar Island. His son, Rev. Henry E. Cooke, eventually took over the journals and included photographs along with his commentary. Four pages of the journal are included here: August 8, 1891, "A Day at Gibraltar;" July 2, 1896, "Repairing the American Flag for the Fourth of July;" September 13, 1899 "Jay Cooke and Family on the steps of Cooke Castle;" August 1900, "The Sailors, Laura, Emily and Carlotta Barney, granddaughters of Jay Cooke." There is also an albumen print of Cooke Castle taken in 1906. The complete volume is owned by the Hayes Presidential Center, and covers the years 1895 to 1905. It is approximately 606 pages and includes 805 images. Born in Sandusky, Ohio, financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905) was the son of Congressman Eleutheros Cooke. Jay Cooke entered the E.W. Clarke banking house at the age of eighteen. He formed the Jay Cooke and Company banking house in Philadelphia soon after the Civil War began in 1861 and began working to raise money for the war effort. Cooke developed a system in which bonds could be redeemed in between five and 20 years and investors could buy bonds in low denominations or through installment plans. By the end of the war in 1865 Cooke had made it possible for over three million people to buy over a billion dollars in bonds. Cooke's strategies were used in subsequent wars as well.
