Description	This eight-page letter from George Phillips of Paulding County, Ohio to Myrtle Reynolds of Van Wert, Ohio is dated September 16, 1906. In it, Phillips writes of his admiration for Reynolds and how lonely he is without her. He also invites her to a picnic at his home in Paulding. In her six-page reply, dated September 23, 1906, Reynolds apologizes for missing the picnic, but affirms her affections for Phillips. Both letters contain romantic verse in the margins, including the inscription, "as shure [sic] as the grass grows around the stump, you are as sweet as a Shugar [sic] lump" in Myrtle's letter to George. The letters, which measure 5" x 7.75" (12.7 x 19.69 cm), provide insight into an African American couple's lives in the early twentieth century. George Augustus Phillips (1885-1984) was a teacher and principal in Ohio and Michigan for fifty years. He was born to Reverend Lloyd Phillips and Georgiana Howard Phillips in Washington Township, Paulding County, Ohio. He began teaching after graduating from Paulding High School in 1907. He later took up farming, but went back to teaching in 1917 when he moved to Cassopolis, Michigan. Phillips attended Western Michigan State College in Kalamazoo during the early 1920s and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1924. He moved from Michigan to Cincinnati, where he received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1927. Phillips taught from 1924 to 1935 at the Stowe-Jackson School in Cincinnati, and was principal of the Stowe School organization form 1935 until 1956, when he retired. His Doctor of Philosophy degree in education was recognized and accepted in 1939 and he received an honorary degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1968. Myrtle Ann Reynolds (1889-1973) was George Phillips' wife for sixty-four years. Her parents were Orlando Reynolds and Casselia Allen Reynolds of Ridge Township, Van Wert County, Ohio. She married George Phillips on October 31, 1909.
