Description	During the Spanish American War, the women of Fremont formed a Soldiers' Aid Society to support Company K of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.), which consisted of many men from the area. The company was never called to fight in Cuba, but lost some men to illness. During the four-month war, the society sent food and supplies to the regiment. This 72-page book describes the founding of the organization and details its efforts. It is officially titled, "Organization and Work of the Fremont Soldiers' Aid Society and the History of Company K, 6th O.V.I. and the Part Taken by Other Fremont Soldiers in the Spanish-American War" Membership lists, committee reports, and correspondence are included. It also provides information about and some photographs of Company K and other notable Fremont soldiers, such as Webb C. Hayes, a major in the 1st Ohio Cavalry and son of President Rutherford B. Hayes. The book measures 6 by 9 inches (15.24 by 22.86 cm). The Spanish American War broke out in April 1898 and ended in July of the same year, during the presidency of Ohioan William McKinley. The United States and Spain battled over control of Cuba, urged on by newspapers such as the New York Journal and the New York World. The so-called "yellow press" presented events from a slanted perspective, favoring Cuban independence from Spain and arousing public sentiment in support of American intervention. As a result of the war, the United States gained control not only of Cuba, but also Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
