George
F
.
Lang
and his
wife
Amelia
Bredeick
Lang
. They were
married
in
1872
.
George
Lang
was
born
in
Delphos
in
1850
. In
1880
, he and
Alex
Shenk
purchased
the
Eagle
Flouring
Mills
,
which
ground
grain
into
flour
.
Water
from the
nearby
Miami
and
Erie
Canal
provided
power
for the
mill
. The
company
was
established
in
1872
as the
Union
Flouring-Mill
Company
, but
changed
its
name
to
Eagle
Mills
. In
1885
, the
mill
employed
ten
men
and
produced
approximately
125
barrels
of
flour
a
day
.
Amelia
Bredeick
Lang
was the
daughter
of
Ferdinand
and
Maria
Bredeick
,
original
settlers
of
Delphos
. The
city
of
Delphos
was
chartered
on
February
7
,
1851
.
It
was
settled
by
German
immigrants
led
by
Father
Otto
Bredeick
,
who
before
emigrating
was
rector
of the
cathedral
at
Osnabruck
.
Bredeick
sent
his
brother
Ferdinand
to
select
a
location
for his
Catholic
congregation's
new
home
in
America
.
Upon
hearing
that a
canal
would be
built
in the
area
,
Ferdinand
bought
land
that would
become
Delphos
. Its
location
on the
Miami
and
Erie
Canal
encouraged
growth
of
manufacturing
and
boatbuilding
and the
establishment
of
hotels
and
inns
. A
cholera
epidemic
and the
rise
of
railroads
slowed
the
city's
growth
in the
late
nineteenth
century
, but the
discovery
of
oil
in the
late
decades
of the
century
brought
renewed
prosperity
.
