Description	Two documents preserve the history of the Fremont Plank Road Company. A two-page report to shareholders, measuring 9.5 by 14 inches (24.13 by 35.56 cm), details expenditures of the company, which raised money by sale of stock to build a toll road through the Black Swamp. The area was heavily forested and the land was very wet, making travel difficult. A stock certificate, shown front and back, was issued in July 1851. It measures 6 by 11 inches (15.24 by 27.94 cm). The road ran from Lower Sandusky (later called Fremont) to Rome (later called Fostoria). Two-inch-thick oak planks formed the foundation for the eighteen-foot wide road, which allowed travel in all weather, unlike dirt roads. It was used for about ten years, until the Fremont, Lima & Union Railroad was completed. The road was abandoned in 1860.
