Scottish
immigrant
Edward
Brown
purchased
100
acres
of
land
in
Sycamore
Township
,
Hamilton
County
,
Ohio
and
established
a
farm
for his
family
.
Early
buildings
date
from his
ownership
and are
historic
centerpieces
of
present-day
Gorman
Heritage
Farm
.
Photographs
show
the
bank
barn
and
springhouse
. The
barn
was
built
into a
hillside
and
offered
shelter
for
animals
on the
lower
level
with
storage
for
grain
,
hay
, and
equipment
above
. An
addition
was
made
in
1900
using
timbers
from an
old
covered
bridge
.
One
picture
,
measuring
3.6
x
4.5
inches

shows
the
front
and
side
of the
barn
. A
second
4.0
x
4.8
inches

photograph
highlights
an
overhang
called
a
cantilever
or
forebay
that
protected
buggies
from
rain
and
snow
.
Ax
marks
on
one
of the
hand-hewn
,
white
oak
beams
from the
early
section
of the
barn
are
seen
in a
third
photograph
,

inches

. A
fourth
picture
,
5.5
x
3.7
inches
(3.97
x
9.43
cm)
shows
the
springhouse
that
served
as a
cooler
for
dairy
products
. A
stream
of
cold
water
pooled
in a
trough
and
maintained
a
constant
temperature
that
kept
food
cool
in the
summer
and
prevented
it
from
freezing
in the
winter
. The
springhouse
was
located
down
a
hill
from the
house
,
requiring
up
and
down
walks
to
deliver
and
retrieve
food
. A
hydraulic
ram
pump
,
which
sent
water
to an
upper
springhouse
,
replaced
the
need
for
hillside
walks
in
1890
and
still
operates
today
. In
July
1863
Confederate
General
John
Hunt
Morgan
and his
troops
raided
through
southern
Ohio
.
Two
Brown
horses
were "
stolen
from the
stable
about
daylight
". A
claim
was
filed
and
compensation
received
from the
State
of
Ohio
. The
farm
continued
to
remain
in the
same
family
for
four
more
generations
.
It
became
the
Gorman
Farm
in
1881
when
a
Brown
daughter
,
Isabella
, and her
husband
,
Amos
Gorman
,
moved
onto the
property
. In
1995
, the
Gorman's
grandchildren
donated
the
property
to the
Cincinnati
Nature
Center
to
insure
its
preservation
.
