Monday 
Morning. 
The Gallia County Teachers' 
Institute met in the Union School 
Building at 9:30 A.M.  Session opened 
with music conducted by Mr. W. L. Nida 
and Miss Pearl Kerns. 
The devotional exercises consisting of a 
Scripture lesson and prayer, were conducted 
by Supt. E. M. Van Cleve of Barnesville O. 
President Nida after addressing a few 
opening remarks to the Institute, introduced 
Prof. Henry G. Williams of Bellaire, O. who 
took up the subject of Arithmetic.  He 
claimed that the first two or three years' 
in this branch should be taught 
incidentally in connection with reading etc. 
and that when Arithmetic proper is taken 
up the teacher should be careful to see 
that his pupils understand perfectly the 
fundamental rules and that they be rapid, 
accurate and thorough in their work. 
A short recess was enjoyed by teachers 
and instructors in getting acquainted with 
each other, after which Supt. Van Cleve 
gave his first lesson in History.  He gave 
the following definitions for Objective and 
Subjective History:  Objective = The development 
of human lives.  Subjective = The study of the 
development of human lives.  He then 
talked at length upon the objects we should 
have in view in the study of History.  Recess. 
A song was sung.  Supt. Williams gave a 
discourse in Grammar.  He emphasized the 
importance of preceding Grammar with 
Language Lessons.  He said that Language 
Lessons should increase the vocabulary of 
the child and that between the ages of six 
and ten was the vocabulary getting period of
