student

instructor
at
Ohio
State
University
, and was
employed
by
Pennsylvania
Railroad
and
Union
Pacific
Railroads
. In
1904
Charles
Kettering
(1876-1958)
recommended
that
Dr
.
Clements
be
hired
to
organize
a
new
chemical
laboratory
and
test
department
at
National
Cash
Register
(NCR)
. At
NCR
Clements
reported
to
founder
and
company
president
John
Patterson
.
After
inventing
the
self-starter
for
cars
,
Kettering
started
his
own
research
laboratory
in
1916
and
asked
Clements
to
organize
the
laboratory
and
serve
as
technical
director
. The
lab
focused
on
war
endeavors
such
as
developing
superior
plane
fuel
and the
Kettering
Bug
, an
unmanned
radio-controlled
flying
bomb
.
After
a
pre-determined
length
of
time
, the
wings
would be
released
and the
bomb
would
fall
to
strike
the
target
with
180
pounds
of
explosives
.
Less
than
50
were
produced
and
none
was
completed
in
time
to
see
action
during
World
War
I
.
Following
the
war
the
lab
was
taken
over
by
General
Motors
and
served
as the
nucleus
of its
research
laboratory
.
Clements
served
as
technical
director
until
his
retirement
in
1939
.
