During the spring of 1847 I was out
of business and as a consequence of such an
occurrence, my mind was tossing from one
subject to another, undecided as to what I would
subsequently pursue. I finally resolved to
travel and in pursuance of my resolution
I took a trip of some 200 miles, which I en=
joyed extremely well. On returning home
and insatiate desire to see the world and its
people was kindled within me. I was so=
licited by a friend and companion to
join the army, and engage in the then
raging war with Mexico. I consented, and
on the 28th of May 1847 I repaired to the
Rendezvous in Columbus Ohio, and
took the oath to serve" During the war
with Mexico" as a volunteer in a volun=
teer Regiment which was rousing in comp=
anies in different parts of the State.
The company being full, on the 29th of
May we were conveyed to the Regimental
rendezvous at Cincinnati, Ohio.
We received our camp equippages about
a week after arriving at Cincinnati,
and marched out about four miles
