Description	This photograph shows a group of fisherman in Sandusky Ohio working on a pound boat (a vessel used to carry pound nets and large catches of fish). The fisherman are using a pound net, which could capture large amounts of fish. The photograph measures 7" x 10" (17.8 x 25.4 cm). A second photograph shows the results of a day's catch, which included dozens of large carp. Pictured in the photograph are (left to right) Charles Gilbert, Captain John H. Gilbert, James Gilbert, Louis Werner, Morris Maloney, William Dickman (holding two fish), Sam Disney, Fred Bickley, William Ochlemacher, Joe Zellerz, J.C. Brewer, and Roscoe Moore. The photograph measures 9.35" x 6.25" (23.5 x 16.51 cm). Commercial fishing was one of the largest industries in Sandusky in the nineteenth century. The shallow waters of western Lake Erie and the natural harbor of Sandusky Bay provided both an excellent source of fish and convenient access for the fishermen. By the 1880s, Sandusky was one of the largest fresh-water fish markets in the world, with more than six firms engaged in the fishing business, employing over 1,000 men. Among the more common types of fish caught for sale were herring, whitefish, pickerel, sturgeon (primarily for its caviar), and yellow perch. Catches in the early days were plentiful, with daily harvests commonly reaching 500 tons per day. During good seasons, the number could exceed 1,000 tons per day. Before refrigeration was available to preserve the fish, it was smoked, salted, or packed in ice harvested from the bay during the previous winter. Among the more prominent companies in the business were H.C. Post & Co. (founded in 1856) and the Lay Brothers. By the end of the twentieth century, however, the commercial fishing industry in Sandusky ceased to exist.
