Description	These three murals are painted on the side walls of the Fayette County Courthouse in Washington Court House, Ohio. Archibald Willard painted them in 1882 during the renovation of the courthouse. The murals measure 10 by 14 feet (3.04 by 4.26 meters). The Spirit of the U. S. Mail depicts a winged woman holding a bundle of letters in her left hand and a single envelope in the other hand that bears the inscription "A. M. Willard... , Cleveland, Ohio." The Spirit of Electricity portrays a woman floating above a body of water bearing a torch in her right hand. The Spirit of the Telegraph is pictured as a winged woman holding a length of telegraph wire. Willard was born in Bedford, Ohio in 1836. His family moved to Wellington, Ohio in the 1850s. Although he had little formal training as an artist, Willard worked for a carriage maker, painting pictures on finished carriages. After serving in the Civil War, his work came to the attention of a Cleveland art retailer who marketed his work. He is best known for his painting The Spirit of '76.
