Description	Father Francis de Sales Brunner of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood created these watercolor sketches, which measure approximately 6.5" x 11" (16.51 x 27.9 cm). The three drawings show three of the foundations, or missions, in Ohio. The first illustration shows Mary at the Crib in the diocese of Cincinnati at Wolfscreek. Later renamed New Riegel, it is in Seneca County and presently in the Toledo diocese. The second sketch shows Mary of the Angels in the diocese of Cincinnati in Thompson. Also called Marywood or Frank, it is in Seneca County and presently in the Toledo diocese. The final watercolor shows New Maria Stein in the diocese of Cincinnati near St. John in Mercer County. It is now called Maria Stein and is in the archdiocese of Cincinnati. Father Francis de Sales Brunner (1795-1859) was the leading missionary priest of the Society of the Precious Blood in Ohio. He was born in Switzerland to Maria Anna and John Baptist Brunner. Maria Anna Brunner was the Foundress of the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Switzerland. The Society of the Precious Blood, a Catholic congregation established in Italy in 1815 by St. Gaspar del Bufalo, began its American ministry in Peru, Ohio in Huron County in January 1844. In July of the same year the Sisters of the Precious Blood, established in 1834, also came to Ohio. The priests, brothers and sisters, also known as "Sanguinists" began their ministry of prayer, spiritual support, and education to German immigrants in northern Ohio. Between 1844 and 1856, nine major foundations or missions were established in Seneca, Mercer, Putnam, and Auglaize counties.
