Description	Mrs. Emily Moses Wallace, shown here in a 3.5" x 6" (8.89 x 15.14 cm) photograph, loaned $3,000 to Brecksville, Ohio to finance a new town hall in 1874. Emily Moses Wallace was born on October 30, 1819 in Ontario County, New York. She moved to Independence, Ohio with her family in 1837 and married Samuel Wallace in 1838. Wallace had worked on the construction of the Ohio Canal and owned a canal boat, the Florida. He ran the canal boat in the summer and spent winters at his farm in Brecksville. After his marriage he concentrated on farming and was very successful. Wallace died of consumption (tuberculosis) in 1850, leaving Emily Moses Wallace with five young children. She continued running the farm until 1884 and added to her husband's wealth. The 1894 History of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County declared that "her capacity as a business woman has been tested, and she has proven entirely capable." Four of Wallace's five children died before they reached the age of 30.
