Description	Civil War veteran Ephraim Cutler Dawes (1840-1895) appears in two photographs, one taken in 1863 and another in 1870. Dawes was the sixth child born to Henry and Sarah Cutler Dawes of Marietta. He was a major in the 53rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.). His elder brother Rufus was a lieutenant colonel in the 6th Wisconsin Volunteers, part of the Iron Brigade. The 1863 photograph measures 2.1 by 3.7 inches (5.33 by 9.40 cm), while the later image is 2.1 by 3.6 inches (5.33 by 9.14 cm). Ephraim Dawes was shot in the jaw near Dallas, Georgia in 1864, leaving him permanently disfigured. He grew a heavy beard to disguise his scars. After the war, he pursued a career in business, owning interests in oil, coal, and freight contracting. In 1866, he married Frances (Fanny) Bosworth, daughter of Marietta, Ohio artist Sala Bosworth. They settled in Cincinnati. Dawes died in 1895.
