Description	These two 5" x 7" (12.7 x 17.8 cm) photographs depict Car No. 1 and Car No. 2 of the Lima Electric Railway on July 4, 1887, opening day for the new system. The Faurot Building, which housed the Faurot Opera House and Music Hall, is in the background of the Car No. 2 photograph. A third photograph (5" x 7", 12.7 x 17.8 cm) shows Car No. 3 in 1893 heading north on Main Street in front of the courthouse. Prior to the electric railway, urban transportation systems ran with cars pulled by teams of horses. With the debut of the Lima Electric Railway, spectators were amazed by the electric-powered cars. According to a county history, it was the first electric car in use west of the Allegheny Mountains. By the 1890s, cities around the nation began to replace horse-drawn trolleys and cable cars with electric cars. Some were later incorporated into extensive interurban railways that carried passengers between major cities. The Lima Electric Railway consolidated with the Ohio Electric Railway in 1907.
