King
(1878-1956)
was
born
in
Lorain
. From
1915
through
the
First
World
War
, he was
assigned
to the
staff
of
Admiral
Henry
Mayo
.
Following
that
conflict
and
another
tour
at the
Naval
Academy
,
Captain
King
commanded
a
submarine
flotilla
at the
New
London
,
Connecticut
submarine
base
. In
August
1928
,
following
flight
training
and
further
service
at
sea
,
King
became
assistant
chief
of the
bureau
of
aeronautics
.
Promoted
to
rear
admiral
in
1933
, he was
made
chief
of the
aeronautics
bureau
.
During
the
late
1930s
, he
commanded
the
fleet's
aircraft
carriers
. In
early
1941
,
King
was
appointed
to
lead
the
Atlantic
Fleet
.
After
Pearl
Harbor
,
King
returned
to
Washington
,
D.C
. to
command
the
U
.
S
.
fleet
in
December
1941
and
direct
naval
operations
beginning
in
March
1942
.
Through
the
rest
of
World
War
II
, he
guided
the
Navy's
plans
and
global
operations
.
King
was
promoted
to the
new
rank
of
fleet
admiral
in
December
1944
.
After
the
war
King
left
his
wartime
offices
,
though
he
retained
an
advisory
role
.
